Amazon Echo Dot 2nd generation
The Amazon Echo Dot shrinks Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant system into a convenient little puck that is the perfect companion to smart home owners that are already invested in the Amazon ecosystem. Right now it is arguably more powerful than Google’s Home Mini in terms of smart home control.
Why we like the Amazon Echo Dot 2nd generation
This is the product that arguably really kicked off the voice assistant industry. Sure, we’ve had Siri for quite a while now, but previous to Amazon entering the game we never really had a convenient hands-free way to control our smart home. When Amazon introduced the original Amazon Echo smart speaker this all changed. And a few years down the road they introduced the Echo Dot, a smaller smart voice assistant speaker that competes directly with the Google Home Mini. It’s small, but it’s mighty. Amazon has a pretty good lead over everyone else in the smart home assistant industry, with the most smart home integrations or “skills” available on its system.
The Amazon Echo Dot is obviously the device that you want if you are already firmly in the Amazon ecosystem. This means that if you are an Amazon Prime video subscriber or already have a Fire TV or Fire Stick, you’ll probably want to stick within the Amazon family for your smart home speakers/assistants. The Echo Dot works seemlessly with the most smart home gadget our of all of the smart speakers available and Amazon is continually updating the skills necessary for the device to do more and more complex tasks like run muli-device commands. Just keep in mind that this won’t work with your Google Chromecast or Chromecast Audio devices.
When looking at the Amazon Echo Dot 2nd generation, you need to compare apples to apples. And apples in this case is the Google Home Mini. They are both small puck-shaped smart speakers that essentially do everything that their bigger brothers can do. One advantage the Echo Dot has over the Google Home Mini is its integration of a 3.5mm headphone connection. This means that you can plug the dot into a pair of headphones or even into the AUX jack of a receiver to pump music into those devices. You won’t get this functionality from Google.
This is the device for you if you are in the Amazon ecosystem. The speaker on it is admittedly underwhelming for music, but if you buy a few of these and put them in different rooms around your house, then you will have a very controllable smart home system that controls almost everything under the sun with Amazon’s ever-expanding Alexa skills system.
