Description

Why we like theΒ Google WIFI mesh network system

The backbone of your smart home system is definitely your router. And most people don’t even realise how much better their network could be until they actually experience it for themselves. The days of just plopping a basic router in the basement and calling it a day are over. Enter mesh networking. This basically means having multiple mesh access points that all run on the same WIFI that extend coverage all over yourself without any noticeable difference in speed or throughput. And one of our favorite mesh network systems is definitely the Google Wifi system. This is essentially three identical wifi pucks that you place throughout your home. One connects to your modem and then other two extend that internet connection to hard to reach areas. It works great and really removes any complications around home networking. All of the settings are done on the excellent Google WIFI app which tells you the ideal place to put each puck. In my experience Google WIFI has increased the speed in my upstairs dramatically. For things like video streaming this is a big deal. I won’t go back to a normal single router system again.

Other Compatibility

Google Wifi can be added as an integration in IFTTT. It is called OnHub (which was the previous generation of Google router tech) and provides some really useful features. For example, you can set smart home triggers for when specific devices connect to your network, or prioritise devices when they connect. All of this can significantly help in making sure that your more heavy data-use devices have the bandwidth they need.

Extra features

A lot of people don’t know that you can also directly connect the Google Wifi pucks together via ethernet wires. This can be useful for when different floors in your house are already wired but you need to extend your wifi to that area. In my experience it gave me the best performance with the Google Wifi mesh network system.

Conclusion

Google Wifi is one of the best performing and most affordable mesh networking solutions on the market. More and more smart homes are requiring solid and consistent wifi connectivity and this mesh system will ensure that your network is up to snuff no matter where your devices are placed.

This Google Product Ended My Wifi Problems. I have had this now for about 5 days and these devices have done exactly what they were advertised to do. My home is about 3700 SF and two stories. My modem is not centrally located in the house. In essence, I have one puck attached to the modem at one end of the house upstairs, one centrally located on the main floor and the third on the main floor as well and on the complete opposite end of the where the modem and first puck are located. Setup was a snap with the app. I actually tried to set the third puck at the extreme opposite end of the house and the app prompted me to move closer to puck 1. Only needed to move it about 8 feet closer and I was set. Coverage is phenomenal. My daughter can now roam the house without dropping our wifi signal. This setup is great and a great value. Upload and download speeds tested at 50Mbps and 56Mbps, respectively. I’m told this is not a very customizable system but I’m not one to delve in to the innards of this kind of equipment anyway.

Very pleased with performance, few minor issues. This network was very easy to setup and there are helpful videos and articles online to help you along the way. I really liked how easy it was to setup the network as wired or mesh and the devices just knew what to do after I had them signed into my Google account. My home network is much more stable than it has been in the past with other routers daisy chained to extend the network. There are only 2 things that I don’t like about this system. There is only one LAN port available at the main HUB and other competitors have multiple. This was easily resolved with a $25 Gigabit switch but it was an additional expense I did not want to have. The other is I can only adjust the setting through the app, not through the BIOS. If Google is going to continue limiting to app control then please expand to macOS, Windows, and iOS for iPad but I’d rather just logon to the router through my browser.

Amazing. If you’ve set up any other Google device on your network, you will find that setting up your Wifi is only slightly more detailed. That is, I set my new router up from my phone (which I believe is how they prefer you do it). The app handles just about everything for you and walks you through the things you have to do. It Provides a painless set-up for a guest network and easily provides access for your guests, allows you to set family parameters (including pausing internet service for devices on a schedule or on demand) and prioritize service for individual devices (QOS) at will. It’s pricey, but fun, cool looking and, if you currently have any issues with signal strength, network speed or connectivity, this will cure your ills. Also, the app let’s you test everything, internet speed, mesh speed (how fast the Google hardware is talking to each other) and specific devices.

PS – Don’t know where the “LoveToShop1965” came from, but I can’t get rid of it. – Verm

Google Wifi – 3-pack. Having a bit of (outdated) IT experience, I purchased this expecting to have to do a fair amount of wrestling to get it connected to my Comcast modem/router. I found that if you know how to install an app on your cell phone and how to read very basic instructions, it is truly plug and play. There were no “network configuration” settings to mess with. The only wrinkle was they don’t mention that you need to make sure your cell phone bluetooth is turned on for the setup app to work. Once the setup is completed you can turn it off again if you want.

The result is high speed WiFi throughout a 2,500 square foot home with the Comcast router at one end of the house and the streaming video TV at the far end.

As a side note, after installing the system, I had to temporarily relocate my desk-top PC (without wireless) to another room. I just plugged it into one of the remote Google units and it fired up with no questions asked.

    Refreshing.
