Why we like the Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen smart lock

The Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen is one of our absolute favorite smart locks. Unlike many other on the market, the Kwikset Kevo tries to blend in as much as possible, looking just like a normal deadbolt. And the smart features on this lock are seamless. Simply walk up to the Kevo with your bluetooth connected smartphone and then touch the lock and it will disengage the deadbolt. It works really well and eliminates the need for entering codes or always opening an app to open the door. The lock even detects whether your phone is outside the house or inside, ensuring that a locked door stays locked. Like other leading smart lock makers, the Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen allows you to give out “e-keys” to family and friends you want to have unlock access. You can even make e-keys expire after 24 hours to make sure you don’t forget to disable access to someone. For extra cost you can also buy a Kevo fob which is a more conventional door fob for people who aren’t comfortable using the smartphone app.

Voice Assistant Compatibility

The Kwikset Kevo can connect directly to Amazon Alexa as well as through Apple Siri. Unfortunately it does not have Google Assistant or Homekit support just yet.

Other Compatibility

There is a very active IFTTT channel for Kwikset Kevo. With this integration you can do stuff like turning on your Hue lights when you unlock the door or send an email to a friend when the door unlocks. All very useful stuff.

The biggest differentiating factor with the Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen is that it looks just like a normal lock and unlocks with a simple touch. To date we haven’t seen a simpler or more secure smart lock. For a simple, less permanent solution we also recommend the August Pro smart lock.

Cool idea but just not ready. Cool idea but still needs work. Fob keys are not always working and the iOS app hasn’t been working well with me since ios9 and I’ve had nothing but headaches. The trick is kinda the same process as taking out your keys. I just open the Kēvo app and I walk up to the door and finally I was able to get it to unlock. Leaving the phone/fob key in you pocket has been a big headache and it doesn’t always work for me. Installation is really easy and the end results make you feel like you have an awesome looking house especially when people ask how you opened the door without keys. It’s a cool idea it’s just not ready yet and needs improvements. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Just touch and go! It’s been a almost year since I had 925 Kevo installed. I love it! My car has touch lock so I thought why not have a keyless entry for my house too!
Now , every once in a while Kevo does not work , like I have to touch the Kevo lock several times or pull out my Key Fobs to Re activate to open the door.
So far, I love it and hope it will Last !! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Works most of the time, too sensitive. I love this when it works, but sometimes it won’t connect with my phone unless I open the app. I have the latest software on the Kevo and my phone too. My biggest gripe though is how easily it activates when I’m just brushing by it with something in my hands, or someone else opens the door and somehow it manages to sense my phone 20 ft away then push the bolt out so when the person who opened the door goes to close the door, if slams the protruding deadbolt into the wall. Then it acts weird and I have to unlock and lock it through the app a few times. Additionally, the knob on the inside of the deadbolt jiggles and feels very cheap, not like a solid metal lock. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone until Gen 2 arrives or the sensitivity issue is addressed. Also in the winter the thing whines like it barely wants to lock and unlock.

Good Idea. These units have been installed for over a year now and have worked well…

Except: Needs range (or single strength) improvement. Example – if phone is inside a purse or bag. It will take longer to operate the lock!

    Security: 10
    Single strength: 5
    Ease of use: 9
    Battery usage: 9
    Style: 9
Ease of installation: 7 (with no previous experience),
    9 (with previous lock experience)

A great improvement would allow the Bluetooth to connect to a wifi hub!!!

No more keys. With my car being push to start I was looking for a way to ditch my house keys. Kevin was the perfect solution. I now only have to have my phone in my pocket, no more keys to scratch my smart phone.

The downside is my Kevo is way too sensitive. When I walk out the door and my body lightly brushes the Kevo, it locks. Not a huge problem because my phone is in my pocket. I would recommend a touch twice feature.
