Why we like the Samsung SmartThings Smart Home Hub

Samsung’s SmartThings platform really hits the mark in terms of balancing widespread support of smarthome products and ease of use. Sure, you can do very intricate automations using a Linux PC, but for most consumers this is not an option. The Samsung SmartThings Smart Home Hub is our pick for the best smart home hub right now. It is a relatively inexpensive option to add in support for all kinds of smart home wireless protocols so you can unify your whole system together.

Voice Assistant Compatibility

All of the major voice assistants are supported here including Google Assistant, Apple Siri (Homekit) and Amazon Alexa. Strangely, Samsung’s Bixby isn’t really supported at the time of writing this. You’re better off with Google or Amazon’s offer in this space as their support is the most extensive right now.

Other Compatibility

The SmartThings hub also fully supports IFTTT and Stringify for extra integrations. This is particularly handy for one of the few holdouts on the platform, Nest. You can use IFTTT in a pinch to bring basic integration with your Z-Wave and Zigbee devices.

Extra features

The most important feature here is all of the added support for Zigbee, Z-Wave, Z-Wave Plus and Bluetooth devices. Without a hub you won’t be able to benefit from some of the most useful smart home devices like Z-Wave light switches. Adding this compatibility also can vastly lower the price of the smart home products you do buy. For example, the new Ikea Tradfri lightbulbs can be fairly easily added to the SmartThings hub. And these are cheap!

The Samsung SmartThings Smart Home Hub is a must for serious smart home owners. It will open up a world of other smart home product options with its built-in Zigbee and Z-Wave Plus support.

Useless for security. If you want to turns lights on and off, this is great. If you want security, do not buy.
In spite of me turning on “device health”, no notifications will be sent when someone disconnects the internet to your hub and steals it (this actually happened to me)
